Overview

Young and old will enjoy the thrill of this camel-accompanied walking safari, followed by game drives and authentic cultural encounters in the iconic Masai Mara.

Take your family on an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime. Usually on a safari you spend a lot of time driving around in a vehicle trying to spot wildlife. On this active safari however, you will walk through the bush, safely guided by Masai trackers and hard-working camels, who will be on hand to carry bags and offer a ride to any tired legs! In the Masai Mara you will stay in a special place renowned for conservation and authentic community interactions and is very welcoming of anyone, young or old, who wants to join in the fun.

DAY 1 - Nairobi

Welcome to Nairobi! You will be met at the airport on your arrival by a Big Safari Company representative and then transferred to your well located, modern city hotel where you can relax in the pool, gym or spa.

Accommodation: Movenpick Hotel & Residences 

DAY 2 - Nairobi

After breakfast your tour of Nairobi will include a visit to the Karen Blixen museum and then meet and feed endangered Rothchild giraffes at The Giraffe Centre. After lunch at Tamambo restaurant, proceed to nearby Nairobi National Park for a game drive to spot lion, hyena, warthog, zebra, giraffe, ostrich, gazelle, buffalo and if you're lucky, black rhino, leopard and cheetah.

DAY 3 - Laikipia National Reserve

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your flight from Wilson airport to Nanyuki.
You will be met on arrival and transferred to the camp. After lunch relax in the beautiful surroundings of the camp.

Laikipia is situated on the edge of the Great Rift Valley and in the foothills of Mount Kenya and is considered one of the country’s wildlife hotspots as well having a wide range of family friendly activities on offer. Walking safaris are a great way to discover the region especially if you have little ones in tow who would get bored sitting in a safari truck for hours on end. This active safari has the added excitement of using camels for transportation and also for fun rides!

DAY 4 - Laikipia National Reserve

This is a mobile walking safari that is custom built to suit your needs. Walks can be as long as you feel comfortable. They are suitable for all ages and previous guests have ranged from 4 year old kids to adventurous 80 year olds. Masai, Samburu and Turkana guides have a collective knowledge of all the plants, animals and culture in the region that will keep young and old entertained and enthralled.

DAY 5 - Laikipia National Reserve

The Satellite Camp will be situated in the most wildlife rich area and you will be based there for the duration of your time in Laikipia, going out each day on walks, camel rides, drives or rock climbing. Alternatively you can stay in Tumaren Camp which is a beautiful static camp that does not move with activities that include spear and club making and other Samburu games!

DAY 6 - Laikipia National Reserve

Normally we will set off with the rising sun with a Masai tracker and a few riding camels who carry our refreshments and day packs. We arrive back at camp for a cool drink and gourmet lunch. The afternoon is normally spent relaxing, enjoying a stream or river, having a siesta or fishing before going for a short evening walk and sundowners. Hot showers are on offer before a three course dinner under the stars.

DAY 7 - Masai Mara

After breakfast transfer to Nanyuki airstrip for your flight to the Masai Mara.
You will be met at the airport and transferred to your lodge for lunch. House in the Wild is a family owned boutique lodge perched on the banks of the Mara River on the edge of the Masai Mara. It is an innovative conservation initiative that is committed to sustainable development that has seen extraordinary increases in wildlife.

In the afternoon enjoy a game drive before returning to camp for dinner.

DAY 8 - Masai Mara

Full day game drive in the Masai Mara.

The Masai Mara (together with Tanzania’s Serengeti) forms Africa’s most famous wildlife area. The iconic landscape consists of endless grass plains and acacia trees. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. Aside from the wildebeest are large prides of lions looking for an easy meal, plus a whole host of other ‘hangers on’ including elephant, gazelle, giraffe and eland.

DAY 9 - Masai Mara

Full day game drive.

The lodge works with neighbouring schools to provide quality education for local communities. Guests are always welcome to visit and donate items - pencils, sanitary towels, t-shirts, footballs and sports shoes all go down a treat!

Accommodation: House in the Wild

DAY 10 - Masai Mara

Full day game drive is included for your final day in the Masai Mara.

DAY 11 - Nairobi and home

Check out after breakfast and drive to Nairobi. Transfer to the international airport for your flight home.

  • Check in is after 2-3pm and check out is before 10am unless otherwise specified in the itinerary.
  • Cancellation 90 – 0 days prior to departure cancellation fee is 100%. It is your responsibility to ensure the correct travel insurance in place to protect you against the need to cancel your holiday. Deposits are non-refundable. Balance payments due 14 weeks prior to departure.
